2. KYNEXA Equine PEMF Manual — Horse & Large Animal Protocol Guide
2.1 Introduction — PEMF for Horses
PEMF therapy was pioneered in the equine world before human applications became widespread. Horses respond exceptionally well to electromagnetic therapy due to their physiology — large muscle mass, dense bone structure, and a high-performance cardiovascular system that benefits from improved cellular energy.
The KYNEXA Equine PEMF system is designed specifically to deliver therapeutic field intensity at the depth required to penetrate through heavy musculature and bone in horses and large animals.
2.2 Safety — Equine Use
- Always ensure the horse is calm and restrained before beginning a session
- Do not use on an agitated or unpredictable horse without proper restraint
- Remove metal shoes from the treatment area where possible (metal does not block PEMF but can concentrate the field)
- The handler should keep hands away from the coil during high-intensity sessions
- Do not use within 48 hours of competition if the horse is drug-tested (PEMF itself is not a prohibited substance, but verify with your governing body)
- Have a second person present for the first few sessions with a new horse
- Session areas: back, hindquarters, neck, legs, and joints are all safe treatment zones
2.3 Recommended Settings — Equine
Horses require higher intensity than humans due to body mass. Always start at mid-range and assess the horse's response before increasing.
| Application | Frequency (Hz) | Intensity | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Post-training recovery (muscles) | 8–10 Hz | 7–9 | 20–30 min |
| Tendon / ligament injury | 8–10 Hz | 8–10 | 15–20 min per area |
| Bone stress / fracture healing | 10 Hz | 9–10 | 20 min |
| Chronic joint pain / arthritis | 8–10 Hz | 7–9 | 30 min |
| Back soreness / muscle tightness | 8–10 Hz | 7–8 | 20–30 min |
| Pre-competition calming | 4–8 Hz | 5–6 | 20 min (2–3 hrs pre-comp) |
| Hoof / lower limb issues | 8–10 Hz | 8 | 15 min per limb |
| General maintenance / wellness | 10 Hz | 7 | 20 min, 3–4x/week |
2.4 Treatment Protocols by Condition
Suspensory Ligament Injury
Frequency: 8–10 Hz | Intensity: 8–10 | Duration: 20 min
- Apply the spot applicator loop directly over the affected limb
- Treat 2–3 times daily during the acute phase (weeks 1–4)
- Reduce to once daily as healing progresses (weeks 4–8)
- Combine with controlled exercise programme prescribed by your vet
SDFT (Superficial Digital Flexor Tendon)
Frequency: 10 Hz | Intensity: 9 | Duration: 20 min per session
- Apply applicator loop around the mid-cannon region
- Daily treatment for minimum 6–8 weeks
- PEMF significantly accelerates collagen synthesis — critical for SDFT recovery quality
Back Soreness & Muscle Tension
Frequency: 8–10 Hz | Intensity: 7–8 | Duration: 25–30 min
- Use the full mat across the horse's back and hindquarters
- Treat after every hard work session
- Many horses visibly relax (dropping head, licking/chewing) within 5–10 minutes
Kissing Spines / Spinal Issues
Frequency: 10 Hz | Intensity: 7 | Duration: 30 min
- Position mat along the topline from withers to croup
- Daily treatment recommended
- Combine with appropriate saddle fit assessment and physiotherapy
Navicular & Hoof-Related Pain
Frequency: 8–10 Hz | Intensity: 8 | Duration: 15–20 min per hoof
- Apply applicator loop around the pastern and lower hoof area
- Treat both front hooves even if only one is symptomatic
- Daily treatment during active pain episodes
2.5 Full-Body Treatment Protocol
For general recovery and maintenance, a full-body treatment session addresses overall cellular health, circulation, and inflammatory load.
- Position the mat over the horse's back — from just behind the withers to the top of the hindquarters.
- Set FREQUENCY to 10 Hz, INTENSITY to 7.
- Run the mat for 20 minutes.
- Move the mat to cover the hindquarters and croup area for a further 10 minutes.
- If the horse has a specific problem area, follow with a 15-minute spot applicator session on that area.
- Offer the horse water after the session.
- Observe the horse's behaviour — a calm, relaxed response indicates good tolerance.
2.6 Horse Behaviour During Sessions
Most horses respond very positively to PEMF therapy. Common normal responses include:
- Head lowering and softening of the eyes — parasympathetic activation
- Licking, chewing, yawning — stress release responses
- Muscle twitching under the mat — normal nerve and muscle response to the field
- Shifting weight and repositioning — the horse is seeking the most therapeutic spot
- Drowsiness or light sleep — deep relaxation response
Signs to reduce intensity or stop the session:
- Excessive agitation or pawing
- Sweating disproportionate to conditions
- Attempting to remove the mat or move away persistently
- Any sign of distress — always trust the horse's response
2.7 Competition Use & Anti-Doping
PEMF therapy does not involve any pharmacological agents and is not a prohibited substance under Racing Australia, FEI, or most governing body rules. However:
- Verify with your specific governing body before use in competition horses
- Some jurisdictions restrict any treatment within 24–48 hours of competition — check rules
- Keep session logs in case of any queries from stewards
- PEMF has been used openly by elite equestrian programmes globally for decades
2.8 Treatment Frequency Guide
| Phase | Recommended Sessions |
|---|---|
| Active injury / acute phase | 2–3 sessions per day (15–20 min each) |
| Sub-acute recovery | Once daily (20–30 min) |
| Heavy training block | Daily post-training (20–30 min) |
| Maintenance / prevention | 3–4 sessions per week (20 min) |
| Pre-competition week | Daily (20 min, low frequency) |
| Post-competition recovery | Once daily for 3–5 days (25 min) |
2.9 Cleaning & Storage
- Wipe the mat with a damp cloth after each equine session — horse hair and sweat should be removed regularly
- Allow the mat to fully air dry before rolling
- The mat cover is wipeable but not machine washable
- Store the control unit away from the stable environment (dust, moisture, ammonia from urine)
- Check cable connections regularly — equine environments are harder on equipment
- Inspect for any signs of rodent damage if stored in stables
3. Accessories & Applicators Manual — Spot Applicators, Loops & Add-Ons

3.3 Figure-8 Loop
The Figure-8 loop creates two overlapping fields ideal for treating bilateral joint surfaces — e.g. both sides of the knee, or the front and back of an ankle.
- Connect to the APPLICATOR port
- Wrap the figure-8 so that the cross-point sits over the target joint
- For the knee: place the crossing point at the kneecap, with loops extending to either side
- For the ankle: place the crossing point at the ankle bone, loops wrapping front and back
- Settings: 8–10 Hz, intensity 6–8, 20 minutes
3.4 Paddle Applicator
The paddle applicator delivers PEMF through a rigid flat surface — ideal for the lower back, upper back, sacrum, and any area where a rigid surface improves contact.
Common uses:
- Lower back pain and disc issues
- Sacrum and SI joint dysfunction
- Upper back and rhomboid area
- Calf and hamstring treatment (place under the leg)
- Connect to the APPLICATOR port
- Lie with the paddle positioned beneath the target area
- Gravity holds it in place — no need to hold
- Settings: 8–10 Hz, intensity 6–8, 20–30 minutes
- For sleep/relaxation use: 4 Hz, intensity 4, 30–40 minutes
3.5 Neck / Cervical Wrap
The cervical wrap is contoured to fit the neck and upper cervical spine — highly effective for neck stiffness, headaches of cervical origin, and upper trapezius tension.
- Connect to the APPLICATOR port
- Sit in a comfortable position — do not use lying down as it may compress the airway
- Wrap around the neck so the coil sits against the back of the neck and base of skull
- Secure with the velcro straps — snug but not tight
- Settings: 8–10 Hz, intensity 4–6, 20–30 minutes
- For tension headaches: use 4 Hz, intensity 4
3.6 Wrist & Ankle Strap Loops
The smaller strap loops are designed for wrists, ankles, and smaller joints — ideal for repetitive strain injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, ankle sprains, and arthritic fingers.
Wrist / Carpal Tunnel Protocol
- 10 Hz, intensity 6, 20 minutes
- Wrap the loop around the wrist so the coil sits over the carpal tunnel (palm side)
- Treat 1–2 times daily during active symptoms
Ankle Sprain Protocol
- Acute phase (0–72 hrs): 10 Hz, intensity 7, 15 minutes — to accelerate tissue repair
- Sub-acute phase (day 3 onwards): 8–10 Hz, intensity 7, 20 minutes
- Wrap the loop around the ankle, coil positioned over the lateral malleolus (outer ankle bone)
3.7 Stacking & Combining Accessories
You can use accessories in sequence within one session. Example protocols:
Full Recovery Session (45 min total)
- Mat — full body: 10 Hz, intensity 6, 20 minutes

- Wipe sleeves inside and out with a lightly damp cloth after use. Do not saturate.
- Do not machine wash or submerge the sleeves or control unit.
- Let sleeves air dry completely before packing away.
- Check hose connectors monthly — a loose click-fit is the most common cause of pressure loss.
- Store flat or loosely rolled in the carry bag, away from heat and sunlight.
4.8 Troubleshooting
| Issue | Likely Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Sleeve not inflating | Hose not clicked in | Disconnect and reconnect the hose until it clicks on both ends |
| Uneven pressure between legs | Hose partially blocked or sleeve fold | Check hose path for kinks; smooth out the sleeve |
| Unit stops mid-session | Timer finished / overheat protection | Restart for another cycle; let the unit cool 10 min if warm |
| Hissing air sound | Zip or velcro not fully closed | Re-secure the sleeve — a small hiss at seams is normal |
| Unit won't power on | Power connection | Check adapter is fully seated; test the outlet with another device |

5.2 Safety Information — Read Before First Use
- Avoid rolling over an acute injury in the first 48–72 hours (fresh muscle tear, sprain, bruising)
- Do not use over varicose veins, open wounds, or inflamed skin
- Pregnancy: avoid the abdomen and lower back; consult your GP first
- If you have osteoporosis, a herniated disc, or a recent fracture, get clearance from your physio or GP
- Mild discomfort on tight spots is normal — sharp pain is not. Ease off if it hurts.
5.3 Charging & Battery
- Charge fully before first use (approx. 3 hours)
- The indicator light shows charging status and turns solid when full
- If storing the roller for a month or more, top up the charge monthly to protect the battery
5.4 Vibration Speed Settings
| Level | Feel | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 1 — Low | Gentle hum | Sensitive areas, warm-down, first-time users |
| 2 — Medium | Steady vibration | Pre-workout warm-up, general tightness |
| 3 — High | Strong vibration | Deep tissue release, quads, hamstrings, glutes |
| 4 — Max | Intense | Large muscle groups, experienced users |
5.5 Rolling Technique — The Basics
- Place the roller on the floor and position the target muscle on top.
- Support some body weight with your hands or free leg to control pressure.
- Roll slowly — about 2–3 cm per second. Slow beats fast.
- When you find a tender spot, pause on it for 20–30 seconds and breathe until it eases.
- Spend 30–60 seconds per muscle group; a full-body session takes 10–15 minutes.
- Never hold your breath — slow exhales help the muscle release.
5.6 Protocols by Muscle Group
| Muscle Group | Speed | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calves | 1–2 | 30–60 sec each | Cross one leg over for more pressure |
| Quads | 2–3 | 45–60 sec each | Roll hip-to-knee, never over the kneecap |
| Hamstrings | 2–3 | 45–60 sec each | Hands behind you for support |
| Glutes | 2–4 | 60 sec each | Sit on roller, cross ankle over knee |
| Upper back | 1–2 | 45–60 sec | Thoracic only — stop above the lower back |
| Lats | 2 | 30–45 sec each | Side-lying, arm overhead |
| IT band / outer thigh | 1–2 | 30 sec each | Go gently — this area is sensitive |
5.7 When to Use It
- Pre-workout: 30 seconds per muscle group at level 1–2 — wakes up tissue without fatiguing it
- Post-workout: 60 seconds per group at level 2–3 — flushes tightness, kick-starts recovery
- Rest days: a relaxed 10-minute full-body session keeps tissue supple
- Desk days: 5 minutes on glutes and upper back undoes hours of sitting
5.8 Cleaning & Care
- Wipe the roller surface with a lightly damp cloth after use. Do not submerge in water.
- Use a mild non-alcohol spray if needed; air dry before storing.
- Keep the charging port dry and free of dust.
- Store in the carry bag away from direct sunlight and heat.
5.9 Troubleshooting
