Red and near-infrared light on skin is a genuine area of dermatology research, not a gimmick. But the honest summary of it is this: results range from subtle to noticeable, they take weeks of consistent use to show up, and not everyone gets them. The American Academy of Dermatology's own position is that at-home devices are meaningfully less powerful than the panels in a clinic, and are best treated as something you add to a routine rather than something that replaces one. Anyone promising you a transformation in a fortnight is selling you something.

What we will say is that this is a well-built mask that makes the habit easy to keep, and keeping the habit is the whole game.

What it is

A cordless silicone mask carrying 240 LEDs across four wavelengths, with three power levels and a rechargeable battery. No cable running to a wall, which sounds like a small thing until you have tried to sit still for twenty minutes tethered to a power point. It folds flat at 4 mm and travels.

The four wavelengths

Wavelength determines how far light penetrates — shorter stays near the surface, longer reaches deeper. This mask covers the range rather than picking one:

• Blue — 460 nm. The shortest wavelength here, and the most superficial
• Yellow — 590 nm
• Red — 630 nm. The wavelength most of the skin research uses
• Near-infrared — 850 nm. Invisible to your eye and the deepest-reaching of the four. The mask will look dim on this setting; that is expected, not a fault

Using it

Consistency beats intensity. Short, regular sessions do more than occasional long ones, so pick a slot you will actually keep — most people land on after showering, in front of the television. Start at P1 rather than P3 and give your skin a fortnight to settle before turning it up. Clean, dry, product-free skin, since serums and sunscreens sit between the light and you.

Then give it a real run. Weeks, not days, before you judge it.

Before you start

Use the eye protection supplied and follow the instructions on it. Sunglasses are not a substitute.

Two groups should talk to a doctor or dermatologist first: anyone with a light-sensitive condition such as lupus, or taking photosensitising medication; and anyone with deeper skin tones, because visible light can trigger pigmentation changes. If you are being treated for a skin condition, ask the person treating you before you add this to it. This is a cosmetic device for a face routine — it is not a treatment and it is not a diagnosis.
