Ice baths or PEMF: what the research actually says about daily recovery

The ice bath dilemma
Cold water immersion has been a staple of athletic recovery for decades, and the logic is intuitive: cold reduces swelling and numbs soreness. But over the last ten years the research has complicated that picture, and a lot of coaches have quietly changed how they use it.
What the research actually found
The study most often cited is Roberts and colleagues, published in the Journal of Physiology in 2015. Two groups did the same strength training programme; one finished every session with a cold water immersion, the other did not. By the end, the cold group had gained noticeably less. Quadriceps size was up around 2 per cent in the cold group against roughly 15 per cent without it, and leg press strength around 42 per cent against roughly 59 per cent.
The proposed explanation is that the inflammatory response after hard training is not simply damage to be switched off. It is part of the signal that tells the body to rebuild. Blunt the signal every session and you may also blunt the adaptation.
It is worth being straight about what has happened since, because the picture is not unanimous. A 2021 review in Frontiers in Sports and Active Living found that the blunting of muscle fibre growth showed up consistently, while the effect on strength was mixed — Fyfe and colleagues in 2019 saw impaired fibre growth but no loss of strength. What is far better established is the other half of the story: cold does reliably reduce soreness and make you feel more recovered in the short term. That combination gives a fairly practical rule of thumb.
When cold still makes sense
Cold is at its most useful when the next performance matters more than the next adaptation:
- Tournament or competition blocks with games close together
- Two-a-day sessions where you need to be functional again in hours
- Managing heat load after training or competing in hot conditions
- Deliberate cold exposure taken on its own terms, away from training
Where it makes less sense is as an automatic daily habit through a build phase, when the whole point of the block is adaptation.
Why athletes are looking at PEMF
That leaves a gap. Through a heavy training block you still want to feel better between sessions, but ideally without switching off the response you are training for.
PEMF is a low-intensity pulsed electromagnetic field applied through a mat or a targeted applicator. It is used as a passive session, typically twenty to thirty minutes, and unlike an ice bath it involves no cold, no thermal shock, and nothing that makes the following session harder to face. Athletes tend to use it in the evening or between sessions, alongside the things that do most of the work anyway: sleep, food and sensible load management.
The honest state of the evidence is that PEMF has a substantial body of research behind it in clinical settings, and a much thinner one in healthy, well-trained athletes. What we hear from people using it day to day is about sleep quality, how legs feel the morning after, and being able to hold output across a week — which is exactly the sort of thing worth tracking yourself rather than taking on faith.
How to think about it
Ice baths are a tool with a specific job, not a daily default. If you are chasing adaptation, use cold deliberately rather than reflexively, and fill the recovery slot with something that does not require suppressing the response you are training for.
If you want to try it, give it three to four weeks and track something simple — sleep, morning soreness, and session quality. That will tell you more than any article will.
