PEMF or compression boots? What each one is actually for

Two tools, two completely different jobs
Compression boots and PEMF both get called "recovery", and both turn up in the same physio rooms and team facilities. That is about where the similarity ends. They act on different systems, and the useful question is not which one wins but which problem you are actually trying to solve.
What compression does
Compression — pneumatic boots, gradient garments, or plain wrapping — works mechanically. External pressure assists venous return and lymphatic drainage, which is why it is good at moving fluid out of a limb, and why the effect is most obvious in legs and arms after a session that has left them swollen and heavy.
The evidence is strongest for how you feel. Compression reliably reduces perceived soreness and the sense of heaviness in the day or two after hard work. Its effects on objective performance markers are more modest and less consistent, which is worth knowing before you build a training week around it.
Compression is at its best for:
- Swelling and fluid in the legs after heavy running, jumping or lifting
- Feeling less beaten up the next morning
- Long travel days, when legs stiffen up in a seat
- Anything limb-shaped, where a sleeve can actually reach it
What PEMF does differently
PEMF applies a pulsed electromagnetic field rather than pressure. Nothing squeezes, and the field is not limited to the shape of a garment, so it can be applied across a back, hips or shoulders as easily as a calf — places compression cannot get to in any meaningful way.
On the evidence: PEMF has a substantial clinical research base, and a much thinner one in healthy, well-trained athletes. It is worth being straight about that gap rather than papering over it. What athletes using it consistently report is sleep quality, how the body feels the morning after, and being able to hold output across a heavy week — all things you can track yourself over a month.
PEMF tends to suit:
- Areas a compression sleeve cannot cover — back, hips, shoulders, neck
- Evening use, when you want a passive session rather than more stimulus
- Whole-body sessions instead of treating one limb at a time
- Training blocks where you are looking for a general recovery habit, not acute swelling management
Using both
They are not competing for the same slot in the day, which is why plenty of people run both. The pattern that makes practical sense is compression close to the session, while there is fluid to move, and PEMF later in the evening as a wind-down. One is a targeted job on a limb; the other is a passive whole-body session.
If you are choosing one to start with, the honest answer depends on where your problem is. Legs that swell and ache after sessions point to compression. A back or hips that never feel loose, or sleep that is poor through heavy blocks, point to PEMF.
A note on expectations
Neither of these replaces the things that do most of the work: sleep, food, and not training more than you can absorb. Recovery kit makes a hard week more tolerable and a good programme slightly better. It does not rescue a bad one.
Whichever you try, give it three to four weeks and track something simple — morning soreness, sleep, and session quality. That will tell you more about whether it suits you than any comparison article can.
